Ten Years of Websites

At Horizon Web Development we have been building websites for almost ten years now and in that time we've built hundreds of websites for hundreds of clients. With this in mind we thought it may be worthwhile not only to show where we are, but also where we have come from. Ten years is a long time in website development, lots of things have changed from the tools used through to the technologies, framekworks and languages used to build the websites.

This is more than just a simple trip down memory lane but a look at how the web, the way we use it, and most importantly the way we build websites has changed in that time.

2006

Below are a couple of examples of websites that we built in 2006, our first year of operation, compared with how some popular websites looked back then too.

Hosting Company

Cloud 9 Hosting

This was one of the first websites that Horizon Web Development produced and the last that was built with tables and very little CSS. In the late 1990s and early 2000s tables were used to create complex website designs rather than the CSS we use today. Table based designs had fallen out of fashion by then but were still widely used, even so it is surprising that we used them.

Yahoo Website in 2006

Yahoo 2006

The Yahoo website in 2006, back then Yahoo was one of the most popular websites on the internet. Their site was also built with a table based design.

Healing Light

Healing Light

This website was built later in the year for a Reiki Healer. By then we'd moved onto creating websites in XHTML 1.0 Transitional and CSS tableless web layouts. As you can see this allowed us to create much more interesting designs.

Apple Website 2006

Apple 2006

This is the Apple website in 2006. Both sites suffer the same obvious flaw, neither displays well on a smartphone. Apple launched the iPhone in 2007 but even then websites still weren't being designed with smartphones or portables devices in mind for several years, until tablets came along.

2007

Below are a couple of websites that Horizon Web Development built after around a year of operation in 2007, once again compared to popular websites of the day.

On The Tools

On The Tools

This website was built in early 2007 for a builder/handyman. Like many of the websites we built back then it was built purely in HTML and CSS. There is no real interaction with the visitor, no pop-out images or anything just very simple hover effects and certainly nothing geared towards mobile. Back in 2007 mobile users were expected to, and quite used to, scrolling around web pages and zooming in when they wanted to read the information on the page.

Myspace in 2007

Myspace 2007

In 2007 Myspace.com was one of the most popular websites on the web and the third most visited after Yahoo.com and Google.com. This site was once again built predominately around tables rather than a CSS tableless design and because of this, and like most websites in 2007 the site was not mobile or tablet friendly.
